Keynote Lecture
\nTrade, Competition and Productivity<\/strong>

Abtract.<\/strong> In the last couple of decades the field of international trade has become increasingly quantitative.\u00a0This is due to two major developments driven by easier accessibility of individual datasets and higher\u00a0computing power. First, econometric works that study ex post the implications of firms’ and workers’\u00a0heterogeneity for the sources, the patterns and the gains from trade in terms of the reallocation of\u00a0productive resources from less to more productive firms. Second, calibration and simulation of\u00a0statistical models that investigate ex ante the (welfare) implications of counterfactual scenarios for\u00a0which data are necessarily unavailable (e.g. Brexit). Building on these developments, the lecture\u00a0discusses whether and how the details of micro reallocations change our understanding of the\u00a0aggregate gains from trade in this age of increasing globalisation.<\/p>\n
