Sommario. Roma Tre University will host the Global value chains for food and nutrition security Workshop. The Global value chains (GVC) framework is a useful analytic tool to understand how international economic processes, particularly the role of transnational corporations, impact structural conditions related to food and nutrition. These conditions make certain types of food available that can potentially impact childhood obesity rates in both developed and developing countries, as well as affect chronic issues like food security around the world.
The role of trade policies in achieving food and nutrition security is undeniable, but situations of clinical interventions in trade are rare as adverse political incentives and adjustment costs are hurdles in implementation. There is a widespread support for trade liberalization efforts, though failure to implement complementary reform may erode the benefits of these efforts. Demand for rigorous impact evaluation is increasing, but a multiplicity of approaches is needed to learn what works and what does not.
The Workshop will provide the opportunity to present results from several ongoing research projects conducted in the organizing institutions.
• Research Project “Food Security in the Middle East and North Africa”;
• 7FP Collaborative Project “Exploring the Future of Global Food and Nutrition Security” ;
• Research Program on “Agriculture for Nutrition and Health”
and work on GVC under the Research Program on Policies, Institutions and Markets.
The purpose of this Workshop is to further contribute to the emerging and converging trends in GVC and trade policy analysis, and their implications for the future of food and nutrition security. Researchers specializing on these issues will present their latest contributions at this meeting. We hope to achieve a common platform to share the results of this current research on GVC and food and nutrition security, to dialogue about diverse and complementary perspectives on these subjects, and, hopefully, create an environment conducive to future research among the members of this Workshop.
The themes of the Workshop are:
• comparative advantages and role of GVC supply responses on food availability both in terms of
quantity and quality;
• value added creation and its impact on jobs creation and income growth;
• impact of GVC and trade policies on food prices;
• effects of GVC on national food security;
• the role of transportation and communication infrastructures on GVC development.

The meetings will begin on the morning of Thursday, Sept. 25th and will continue through the following Friday evening.
